In Fall of 2000, the Tampa Bay Water Authority confidently installed 40,000 feet of this 84-inch PCCP from Price Brothers to replace several failed sections of an earlier, ill-fated concrete pipe installation. The 40,000 feet of 84-inch diameter PCCP installed in Pasco County, Florida, for Tampa Bay Water is especially significant for Price Brothers Company.
The $18 million Cypress Creek Transmission Main replaces several miles of concrete pressure pipeline that began to experience serious failures less than 20 years after it was installed--with each failure causing intermittent water shortages for more than one million people.
The highly publicized failures led to an investigation of the pipeline; some of which was supplied by Interpace and some by Price Brothers. This investigation showed that the Price Brothers' PCCP was substantially different from and superior to that supplied by Interpace.
Now, more than 10 years after those costly and controversial failures, the Price Brothers reputation for building the most reliable, long-lasting pipe in the industry remains intact. Interpace, however is no longer in business.
Tampa Bay Water has worked closely with Price Brothers in the intervening years to reconfirm the reliability of PCCP. Engineering and Project Manager Kenneth Herd says, "We appreciate Price Brothers' commitment to work with Tampa Bay Water in meeting the water supply needs of the region."
In March, Tampa Bay Water read bids from 14 contractors--all bidding Price Brothers PCCP as well as steel pipe--for the new pipeline. Martin K. Eby Construction Co. Inc. won the contract based on using Price Brothers PCCP. The engineering firm is Post, Buckley, Schuh & Jernigan, Inc. in Tampa.
