Power plant addition making good use of fabricated steel pipe from Price Brothers
A new $80-million, 63.4-megawatt petroleum-coke-fired generating unit will be added to the utility's existing 102-megawatt generating capacity. Completion is set for 2005. To assure the most efficient, least disruptive installation of new intake and discharge pipelines within the utility-laden confines of the plant, MPU and its design engineer, Lutz, Daily & Brain, LLC, elected to use fabricated carbon steel pipe and fittings in 42-inch and 66-inch diameters. The general contractor for the project, Oscar J. Boldt Construction Company, specified Price Brothers to supply the fabricated steel pipe for the project based on previous experience with our company and our ability to respond quickly to changing project conditions. Price Brothers worked closely with Boldt Construction and Lutz, Daily & Brain, LLC, for several months to determine the best overall route for the intake and discharge pipelines. The existing plant's complex infrastructure of utilities, railroad spurs, and line connections greatly complicated the routing of the final pipeline. Production, delivery and installation of the steel pipe and fittings is now on a fast-track schedule. The Price Brothers pipe features a special field-welded and mechanically restrained testable harness-clamp joint that will allow Boldt Construction to install the pipe in just a few weeks. Quick and efficient installation of the main pipeline is critical so that all the circulating water pipe connections can be completed during the scheduled plant shutdown in late May, 2004.
