Forward Thinking: Contingency planning for utilities and how Price Brothers Company is ready to help

This photo shows a 120-foot replacement section of 84-inch Price Brothers pressure pipe that arrived at a Tampa, Florida, repair site just a few days after the break occurred. |
Thanks to its conservative design and quality construction, Price
Brothers prestressed concrete cylinder pipe has always provided
safe, reliable and sustained operation under normal and transient
conditions.
Unfortunately, accidents can happen. And because we cannot design
a pipe to withstand an accidental encounter with a backhoe or
jackhammer, we can provide you with a course of action to follow
if such an event should ever occur.
When a former pipe-manufacturing competitor, the Interpace Corporation,
went out of the concrete pressure pipe business in 1986, Price
Brothers inherited a very serious challenge. We're now serving
a number of pipeline owners who purchased Interpace pipe that
has failed prematurely.
Price Brothers maintains at each of our plants a full inventory
of replacement pipe sections and closures in various sizes as
well as other parts needed for emergency repairs. We also stock
repair saddles for 16-inch through 48-inch lined cylinder pipe.
Just as important, however, is your ready access to our emergency
response team by calling our 24-hour emergency hotline--1-800-445-1534.
Today, as many waterworks managers are developing contingency plans for their systems, we're ready to provide copies of our 12-page Emergency Repair Manual offering complete information about Price Brothers emergency repair procedures and services.
Whenever a problem occurs, our full-time field service representatives are directed to respond immediately and assist in making the repairs as quickly as possible. This sometimes requires them to work around the clock.
We can usually have repair material on the site of a pipeline failure within hours of being notified. Most lines are back in service within a very short time.
For example, when a 60-inch line failed in 1990 in Onandaga County, New York, Price Brothers personnel and replacement pipe were on the site within 14 hours. The county's Administrative Director later summed up the Price Brothers commitment to our customers: "Those of us in the water utility business are accustomed to having service taken for granted. Never having had the need for such emergency service, I must admit that we were somewhat guilty of the same concerning your services. It is truly encouraging to know that there is still someone out there who can deliver."
