Optional Suggested Specifications for:
INTAKES AND OUTFALLS
For intakes and outfalls, one of the following options shall be substituted
for "FINISHING THE JOINT" in either the pressure or gravity line
specifications.
(Fresh Water Intakes and Outfalls and Treated Sewage Outfalls Laid Subaqueously)
No joint protection inside or outside is needed where the pipe joint is
continuously below the water line and joint rings are zinc metalized to
0.004-inch minimum thickness.
(Intakes and Outfalls in Sea Water)
Rope-type or trowelable mastics should be used to fill both the inside
and outside joint recesses. Mastic for the outside recess should be applied
to the spigot shoulder just prior to joining the pipe. On pipe interiors,
a rope-type or trowelable mastic shall be affixed to the concrete face
of the bell socket just prior to pushing the spigot into the bell, so that
the mastic material squeezes to fill the internal joint recess. For portions
of the line passing through the surf zone, the joint rings should be painted
with coal tar epoxy to 8 mils dry film thickness. Mastics that are detrimental
to rubber gaskets shall not be used. Similarly, primers to be used in conjunction
with rope-type mastics must not come in contact with gaskets while the
primer is still wet.
